Principal, engineer injured in rebel assault

JALALABAD (PAN attack on their vehicle in the Surkhrod district of eastern Nangarhar province on Monday noon, officials said.

The assault happened in the Baghbanan area at 12pm, the district chief, Syed Akbar Ali Sadat, told Pajhwok Afghan News. However, he had no further details of the incident.

But Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, the governor’s spokesman, said the attackers in a car attacked a police vehicle carrying the principal. The headmaster was wounded along with another man, he added.

Meanwhile, Department of Education spokesman Asif Shinwari identified the second wounded person as an engineer of the Urban Development Department. Eng. Shafiq, who was in the area to draw up architectural plans for schools, was injured along with Principal Usman.

Public Health Director Dr. Baz Mohammad Sherzad said the two were under medical treatment. They are said to be in stable condition.

Zabihullah Mujahid, speaking on behalf of the Taliban movement, said the fighters attacked a police vehicle in the area, killing seven people on board.
