The cross-border attack took place at 7am, with the shells hitting civilian houses in the Shaltan area, police chief, Brig. Gen. Auz Mohammad Naziri, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The four young girls were from the same family, he said, adding another two women were wounded and a child had been unaccounted for in the wake of the shelling.

Five animals belonging to the family also perished and the house destroyed. He said they had no information as to who had fired the shells from Pakistan.

A resident, Bashirullah, said mortar shells were fired on a daily basis from the Pakistan side of the Durand Line, but this time the shelling inflicted casualties on residents.
