KABUL official said on Monday.
Contracts for the school buildings were signed between Education Minister Ghulam Farooq Wardak and representatives from Afghan reconstruction companies, an official in the education ministry said.
The buildings will be constructed in Kabul, Helmand, Nangarhar, Herat, Nimroz, Badakhshan and Badghis provinces. Additionally, shipping containers will be sent to some of the schools in these provinces and converted into libraries, the source said.
Construction of the new buildings will create an improved learning environment for 7,000 students, 25 percent of whom are female, he said.
Work on the buildings, funded by the World Bank and Danish government, would begin in the next 15 days, he said.
There are nearly 14,000 schools in Afghanistan, but 50 percent of them have no buildings, he said. According to the education ministry, $1.3 billion is needed for the construction of the rest school buildings.
