FAIZABAD (PAN): Security personnel detained the alleged mastermind of a recent attack on the governor of Badakhshan, officials said on Tuesday.
Maulvi Shams-u-din and Amuniddin, were arrested in Bashand village of Wardooj district, the governor’s spokesman, Abdul Rauf Rasikh, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Taliban fighters attacked the convoy of the governor, Shah Waliullah, on Monday as he was returning to Faizabad after visiting Ashkasham, Wakhan and Zaibak districts.
Razaq and 16 fighters intended to detonate a roadside bomb, carry out two suicide bombings, then attack the governor’s convoy, Rasikh said.
However, police reached the area and fought off the militants. Two Taliban attackers were killed while an employee of the National Directorate of Security (NDS) was wounded in the clash, he said. Fourteen other attackers fled from the scene.
Razaq and Shams-u-din were captured in the house of the third detainee, Amuniddin, Rasikh said. A Kalashnikov and three remote-controlled devices for bombs were recovered along with them.
