WASHINGTON (PAN accept certain non-negotiable conditions in order for the reconciliation process to move forward.
“Taliban need to renounce violence, they’ve got to break their ties with Al Qaeda, and they’ve got to accept the Afghan constitution,” said State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland.
“Those are firm redlines. Those are the basics for reconciliation,” she said.
Nuland confirmed at her daily news conference that the US has established preliminary contacts with the Taliban, although she said the Afghan government is leading the reconciliation efforts.
Meanwhile at a fund raising event, US President Barack Obama said, “In Afghanistan, we’re in the process of a transition where we are starting to give more and more responsibility to Afghans for their own security, at the same time as we have been dogged in pursuing Al Qaeda and are creating a situation where it is very, very difficult for them to operate.”
