KANDAHAR CITY (PAN, an official said on Wednesday.

At a press conference, Kandahar Public Health Deputy Director Ahmadullah Faizi dismissed earlier reports that the disease was cholera and that it had killed 16 people. Nonetheless, the outbreak of diarrhea took a heavy toll, he said.

The epidemic claimed the lives of seven people in a single locality – the Ishaqzai area of Maroof district of Kandahar. The dead included five children between 7 and 14 years of age and two adults, he said.

Faizi said 270 people, including 20 women, Loye Karez and Abdul Bari.

Nearly 78 people were infected by the disease in Atghar district of neighboring Zabul province. One of them died in the hospital, according to Faizi.

He said the outbreak has now been brought under control.

Three teams of doctors have visited the infected areas since the epidemic broke out a week ago, he said.

A day earlier, a delegation headed by Acting Public Health Minister Suraya Dalil travelled to the two districts. The delegation included doctors and health officials, he said.

The health director linked the outbreak of diarrhea to the consumption of unsafe water.
