LASHKARGAH (PAN and the Governor’s Office said on Wednesday.

The joint operation targeted a Taliban) said in a statement.

Eight insurgents were killed when they engaged the patrol with small arms fire, it said.
The target was a senior Taliban leader who has recently been appointed the Taliban deputy governor for the district and has direct communication with Taliban provincial leadership, the statement said.

The Governor’s Office said five Taliban militants were killed and two others captured alive during the nighttime offensive.

The operation was carried out in the Mianjoy area, upper Nawzad, where the insurgents had gathered to mourn the death of their two comrades, a statement issued from the Governor’s Office said.

The dead included two commanders, one of them identified as Mullah Noor Mohammad, three others militants and a suspected person, it said.  Another two insurgents were injured.

But the district police chief and residents said the dead were locals.

The district police chief, Attaullah, said the offensive was carried out in the Sarghal village.

He said the Taliban commander, Noor Mohammad, was killed along with five civilians in the area.

Foreign troops had killed a local Taliban commander four days ago. Residents were offering prayers for the dead when foreign troops attacked them, the police official said.

Resident Jan Mohammad said the dead included women and children.

There has been no word from the Taliban about the incident.
