KABUL) for rejecting the special election court’s ruling that disqualified 62 of the sitting 249 parliamentarians.

On June 23, the special court charged with investigating last year’s parliamentary election found fraud in 33 out of Afghanistan‘s 34 provinces, saying that 62 of 249 sitting parliamentarians were not qualified to hold their seats based on the results of a vote recount.

IEC officials on Sunday said that no one had the authority to change the results of Sept. 18 elections after the final results had been announced.

Any attempt to alter the final results could violate the constitution of Afghanistan, IEC officials said in a statement issued here in Kabul on Sunday.

Deputy Secretary Farhad Azeemi read out a resolution passed by the house, saying the Parliament supports the IEC’s stance on the court’s verdict.

The resolution warned that anyone challenging the election commission would have to face the wrath of parliamentarians.

It also demanded that the United Nations, political parties and civil society organisations put their weight behind the election commission.
