Parliament sets four-day deadline for AG to quit

KABUL): Parliament, setting a four-day deadline for the Attorney General to quit his job, on Tuesday asked the government to implement its no confidence votes against the six Supreme Court justices.

On Wednesday (June 23), a majority of the Wolesi Jirga, the lower house of parliament, voted to summon the Attorney General (AG), Mohammad Ishaq Alako, over his involvement with a special court tasked with investigating fraud allegations in last year’s parliamentary election.

But the top prosecutor did not appear in the house and sent a letter saying the house had no authority to question him.

A representative from southern Kandahar province, Mohammad Naeem Hamidi, accused Alako of misusing his authority, saying a deadline should be set for him to quit his job.

Abduld Hafiz Mansoor, a lawmaker from central Kabul, and Abdul Zahir Qadir from eastern Nangarhar province insisted a deadline must be given to Alako.

After a prolonged debate, Speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi, said that based on recommendations from lawmakers, the house gave the Attorney General four days time to quit his job.

Ibrahmi said if the AG did not quit his job, the house would seek other means to sack him. However, he did not explain.

He also asked the government to implement no trust votes against six apex court justices.

Lawmakers on Saturday voted to fire the attorney general and six Supreme Court justices.
