New Zealand soldiers injured in Kabul hotel attack

Two International Security Assistance Force (ISAF.

According to a statement released Wednesday by the New Zealand Defence Force, two members of the New Zealand Special Operations Forces sustained moderate injuries during the incident. Their relatives have been informed.

New Zealand has 191 troops in Afghanistan, based in Bamyan and Kabul provinces. Two of their soldiers have been killed so far in Afghanistan.

The attack began around 10 pm Tuesday and lasted until 3 am Wednesday. Troops in an ISAF helicopter engaged the last of the assailants on the roof of the Intercontinental Hotel,according to ISAF spokesman Capt. Justin Brockhoff. Several of the militants detonated suicide vests and several were killed by ISAF gunfire, he said.

The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack.
