40 militants killed in Mohmand clashes
ISLAMABAD (PAN): Forty militants have been killed during clashes with Pakistani security forces backed by jets and helicopter gunships in the Mohmand tribal region near the Afghanistan border, an army officer said on Thursday.
Launched three days ago, the offensive targeted militant hideouts in various parts of the lawless region, a military commander, Brig. Aftab Ahmad, told Pajhwok Afghan News in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
He said 40 militants were killed during the offensive. One soldier was killed and a number of others wounded in a roadside bombing during the operation, he said. A number of areas were cleared of insurgents, Ahmad said.
A resident of the agency's Mathai area, Khan Mohammad, said militants used to flee the region when a military operation begins, but return after the offensive ends.
