ISLAMABAD (PANinfo-icon): Forty militants have been killed during clashes with Pakistani security forces backed by jets and helicopter gunships in the Mohmand tribal region near the Afghanistaninfo-icon border, an army officer said on Thursday.

Launched three days ago, the offensive targeted militant hideouts in various parts of the lawless region, a military commander, Brig. Aftab Ahmad, told Pajhwok Afghan News in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

He said 40 militants were killed during the offensive. One soldier was killed and a number of others wounded in a roadside bombing during the operation, he said. A number of areas were cleared of insurgents, Ahmad said.

A resident of the agency's Mathai area, Khan Mohammad, said militants used to flee the region when a military operation begins, but return after the offensive ends.
