KABUL): President Hamid Karzai, insisting on national unity, on Friday said there should be no hurdle to making the security transition plan a success, a process beginning this month.

“A strong commitment by the people of Afghanistan and their unity can make the process a success,” Karzai told a delegation that called on him at the Presidential Palace.

Led by Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, head of the Transition Commission, the delegates who concluded a two-day conference on the transition plan in Kabul, briefed the president about decisions made at the conference.

Ghani told Karzai that issues concerning training and equipment to Afghan forces, other necessary requirements, coordination among Afghan forces and long and short term programmes to enhance their capacity were discussed on the day first of the conference.

He said the key issue discussed at the meeting was the readiness of Afghan forces to take over the security responsibility from their foreign counterparts.

The second day was specified for talks with representatives of the international community, he said. Long term international assistances to Afghanistan in diverse fields of life were discussed with the representatives, who assured their full cooperation in this regard, Ghani said.

Karzai praised Ghani for his efforts and contribution toward the transition plan, which is scheduled to be complete by 2014.

The president said the people of Afghanistan were impatiently waiting to see the process begin. Karzai hoped the plan would be successfully complete by 2014. He insisted there should be no hurdle in the way of making the plan a success.

The president also said eliminating administrative corruption was his government’s top priority, asking officials concerned to make efforts at ensuring the rule of law and preventing elements trying to breach the law.
