MAZAR-I-SHARIF (PAN and Livestock Department in northern Balkh province has established a number of committees to save province’s forests, which have been reduced to roughly 30 percent of their former size.
Roughly 70 percent of Balkh’s forests have been destroyed by war and deforestation, Balkh Agriculture and Livestock Director Katib Shams told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He said that locals are involved in the new committees, established by the department to help prevent the further loss of forests.
“Our region has a large forest,” a Kashandi district resident and a member of a forest committee, Haji Rajab, said.
He said the government alone could not protect the forest, saying local people also had to bear some responsibility.
