UK Defence Ministry: Missing ISAF soldier is British

KABUL is British.

The Defence Minstry said in a statement delivered to Pajhwok Afghan News that the servicemember was based in Central Helmand and was reported missing early Monday morning. The Taliban claim to have seized the soldier.

ISAF said in a statement that the servicemember has been listed as “duty status – whereabouts unknown” in the south. ISAF added that an active search effort was in progress to find the soldier.

The UK Defence Ministry has confirmed the search operation and said that the servicemember’s next of kin have been notified.

A Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousaf Ahmadi, said the American soldier was kidnapped by fighters in Kopki area of Nad Ali district of southern Helmand province on Sunday evening. The soldier was later killed, he said.
