HERAT CITY (PAN): In the first quarter of this year, customsrevenues from Farah province increased three and a half times compared to the same period last year, an official said.

Abdul Jabar Karokhel, the general manager of the Farah customs office, linked the increase to capacity building among customs officials, as well as an increase in imports.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News that food items, oil, vehicles and machine-made carpets are among major imports that go through Farah on their way to other Afghan provinces from Iran.

The customs general manager said the first three months of this year saw Farah customs earning more than 156 million afghanis, while during the same period last year, that revenue stood at less than 45 million afghanis.

Still, Karokhel said insecurity and the lack of proper communication are barriers to further strengthening business ties with Iran.

He urged the government to construct roads in the province to facilitate the passage of commercial goods.
