Airstrike kills Taliban-appointed district chief, others

JALALABAD (PAN-appointed chief for Hisarak district was killed along with 12 fighters in an airstrike in the central province of Logar, an official said on Tuesday.

According to Hisarak district chief Haji Abdul Khaliq, NATO-led troops conducted the strike in Tang, an area between Hisarak and Azra districts.

Previously, the Logar provincial council chief, Dr. Abdul Wali Wakil, and a spokesman for the governor, Din Mohammad Darwesh, told Pajhwok Afghan News that nine civilians and seven insurgents were killed in the operation, while five other civilians were injured.

Meanwhile, Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said that 14 civilians were killed in the airstrike, and did not confirm the fighter’s casualties.

The ISAF confirmed that combined Afghan and coalition forces conducted the operation in the Azra district. ISAF said that some insurgents were killed, but denied civilian casualties in the operation.
