KABUL): A district chief in Nimroz province was sentenced to 20 years in prison for trafficking narcotics.

He was sentenced by the Appeals Court of the Criminal Justice Task Force (CJTF) along with three accomplices, including two of his sons.

One of the district chief’s sons was the commander of Nimroz Reserve Division, and the other was a soldier that division.

In a statement, the court said that the Counter-Narcotics Police of Afghanistan (CNPA) had arrested the district chief, his two sons, and a third accomplice for trafficking narcotics and providing facilities for drug traffickers.

The primary investigation found that the three had used official vehicles to transport drugs from the Dilaram district to Zaranj City in Nimroz province.

At the end of the investigation, the case was decided by the CJTF and later referred to the CJTF appeals court.

The appeal prosecutor said that the Dilaram district chief had been apprehended by the Counter Narcotics Police of Afghanistan (CNPA) based on authentic information and that the CNPA had seized 35 kg opium and 2 kg morphine during a house search.

The convicted drug traffickers had attorneys for their legal defence and were convicted according to the counter-narcotics law of Afghanistan based on evidence brought before the court.

In the last four months, the CJTF Appeal Court has convicted 183 suspects and acquitted four due to lack of evidence.
