MAZAR-I-SHARIF (PAN): Two commanders were among 15 insurgents killed during a joint operation by Afghan and international forces in northern Balkh province, officials said on Sunday.
The offensive was conducted in an area between Chamtal and Charbolak districts late on Saturday night, Gul Ahmad Payman, the district chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He said the insurgents’ bodies were still lying at the site. Several fighters were wounded, but the exact figure was yet to be known, he said.
Police spokesman Sher Jan Durani said the dead included two top rebel commanders, named Mullah Samar and Mullah Zamir.
The joint force and civilians suffered no casualties, he said, adding the clearing operation was still ongoing in the area.
