21 schools reopen in Zabul

QALAT (PAN official said Monday.

Twenty-one schools have been reopened in the province this year. Director of Education Sher Aqa Sapi told Pajhwok Afghan News that nearly 150 schools remained closed due to security problems.

The reopened schools are located in the provincial capital Qalat and adjoining areas, according to Sapi, who said that14 schools had been reopened in Shah Joi district.

Efforts were underway to reopen schools in Shahr-i-Safa, Kalat and Daichopan districts as well, he added.

About 5,820 students, including 1,000 girls, are enrolled in the schools. “We are trying to reopen dozens of schools before the end of the current year,” he said.

Noorullah, an 8th^–grader from the Shah Joi district, said all students wanted education. But many schools remained closed for five years as a result of insecurity, affecting hundreds of students, he complained.

Nazar Mohammad, a tribal elder, said people had started realising the importance of education and wanted the government to reopen all schools as soon as possible.

In addition to opening more schools, the authorities should train teachers and provide education facilities for residents of remote areas, he said.
