NIMROZ (PAN

Nimroz has two seats in Wolesi Jirga, or lower house of Parliament. One of the seats is reserved for a woman, but in the last Parliamentary election female candidates won both seats.

Some Nimroz residents claim their MPs have done nothing for the past seven months.

Ghulam Dastager, a salesman in the province, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the Nimroz MPs promised during their campaigns to build the Kamal Khan dam and to provide clean water, security, and health facilities. But after winning election, he said, the MPs cut ties with their constituents.

“The MPs promised to pave the roads, pay attention to women’s rights, pay teachers more, clean the water, and provide electricity for the people, but nothing has been done so far,” said Freshta, a teacher in a girls’ school.

MPs do not have executive authority, but they should bring people’s problems and requirements to the relevant authorities, she said, adding that no inactive MP will be reelected.

Naqeebullah, another resident, said the MPs served only their own families and friends, rather than the broader public.

But Farida Ahmadi, a provincial MP, called the criticisms untrue.

“Last week I spoke with President Karzai about Kamal Khan dam. He promised to reconstruct it, and share the issue with relevant authorities,” she said.

She added that she has rented three hundred and fifty acres of state land to farmers in the Charburjak district of the province, and that the Ministry of Higher Education has agreed to fund scholarships in the province in the coming year.

She also maintained that she has helped build the capacity of the provincial civil hospital, and that the Ministry of Finance has extended $3 million (around 142 million afghanis) for the provincial water supply.
