A dozen convicted of drug trafficking

KABUL): A dozen individuals were sentenced to 10-20 years in jail on the charge of trafficking drugs, the Criminal Justice Task Force (CJTF) announced on Sunday.

The accused were convicted by an appellant court at the end of an open trial on the basis of evidence. They had defence lawyers to plead their cases, CJTF spokesman, Ahmad Khalid Mowahid, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Hailing from Kandahar, Jawzjan, Farah, Nimroz, Helmand and Faryab provinces, they were held with more than nine kilograms of heroin, 2.3 tonnes of opium and 650 kilograms of hashish by counternarcotics police.

They were convicted by the court of appeal that upheld the verdict of a primary court and investigations by prosecutors into their cases, Mowahid said. Under the relevant law, a convict could move the Supreme Court against the appellate court decision.

As many as 212 people were convicted of drug trafficking in the first quarter of the current solar year (March 22, 2011 to July. 22, 2011).
