KHOST CITY (PAN): Dozens of people participated in a cycle race that started in the Ismailkhel district and culminated in Khost City, the capital of southeastern Khost province, an official said on Thursday.

Standing in front of the community centre, spectators included provincial government officials, council members and hundreds of residents. They cheered the cyclists on reaching Khost City.

Olympic Committee Director Aziz Malang told Pajhwok Afghan News the race had been organised to pay tribute to President Hamid Karzai for his services to the nation. Another objective was to pick cyclists for the national team.

More than 60 cyclists took part in the seven-kilometre race.  Sher Ragha won the competition, while Rafiqullah finished second and Noorullah third.

Malang said 10 players would be selected for domestic competitions to pave their way for joining the national team.

The winner, Ragha, said he had practiced for four months ahead of the race. He was optimistic of his inclusion in the national squad.
