KABUL): Pajhwok Afghan News strongly condemns the attacks in Uruzgan province on Thursday that killed its provincial correspondent, Ahmad Omaid Khpalwak, and 18 other Afghans.

Pajhwok continues to be deeply concerned for the safety of all reporters in Afghanistan. Khpalwak was the third Pajhwok journalist killed since the news agency began in 2004.

Khpalwak, 24, was killed today at the Uruzgan Radio TV office during suicide bombings and gunfire. At least 18 other people also died in the attacks; 37 are reported injured.

His brother, who received the body from the hospital, said that Khpalwak was hit by 20 bullets.

Pajhwok Director Danish Karokhel said the reporter’s death leaves a vacuum for the news agency and for Afghan media. Khpalwak had worked with Pajhwok, first as a freelancer and then on staff, since 2007.

“He was a talented and dedicated reporter and contributed to the progress of media freedom and democracy,” Karokhel said. “Khpalwak was only independent reporter in Uruzgan, and was always reporting the problems and events of that province with full neutrality.”

Karokhel called him the real “reflection of truth,” which is Pajhwok’s motto.

Karokhel said the residents of Uruzgan have lost their true voice, as reporting from the province will be stifled.

In addition to Pajhwok, Khpalwak reported for BBC Pashto-Dari radio service.

Khpalwak’s family was from Uruzgan, but he was born in Kabul in 1987.

He had been married two years, and had one infant daughter.

In addition to reporting, Khpalwak captured photos and video for Pajhwok His recent stories included coverage of many violent attacks in Uruzgan, as well as a recent retrospective of retrospective on the lives of Uruzgan lawmaker Hasham Watanwal and former governor, MP and aide to President Karzai Jan Mohammad Khan

His last story, published yesterday, was an interview with a man who was arrested in a plot to carry out a bombing attack.
