Poland supports Afghan-led peace process

KABUL): Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland Radoslaw Sikorski on Tuesday said his country was ready to support the Afghan-led peace process and would continue its assistances beyond 2014, when the withdrawal of foreign troops complete.

At a joint conference with his Afghan counterpart, Zalmay Rassoul, Sikorski said his country would sign an agreement with the Afghan government regarding economic support in the near future.

He did not provide an exact date for the contract.

He said his country would not leave Afghanistan alone after the withdrawal of foreign troops.

Rassoul said he discussed with Sikorski matters concerning the economical situation of the country after the 2014 deadline.

Sikorski had earlier said that Polish soldiers would stay in Afghanistan as long as the Afghan government wants. Poland has 2,630 soldiers in Afghanistan in southern Ghazni province.

“The peace process is a regional process. Neighbouring countries should also support it,” said Sikorski, who also met President Hamid Karzai in the afternoon.

Karzai and Sikorski discussed the war on terror and the role of Polish in Afghanistan’s reconstruction and security, a statement issued from the Presidential Palace said.

The two leaders also talked about reconstruction projects in southern Ghazni, which is to be renamed as the cultural capital of Islamic civilization in 2013.
