Nangarhar flooding kills one, causes heavy damage

JALALABAD (PAN): Rain-induced floods killed one person and caused extensive property damage in the Pachir Agam and Spin Ghar districts of eastern Nangrahar province Friday, officials said on Saturday.

Spin Ghar police chief Malak Zarjan told Pajhwok Afghan News that the floods originated Friday from the Maidanak and Sawi Naw areas of the Momand Dara district, destroying 7 houses.

A 45-year old man named Tahsil and around 100 livestock died in the floods in the Maidanak village, he said, adding that 80 acres’ worth of crops and several water heads had also washed away in the Momand Dara area.      

Pachir Agam district chief Azizullah Shinwari told Pajhwok that heavy hail and rain fall had hit the Ghash, Ain Khail, Alfan Khail, Lola Khail, Muhsen Khail and Jalee villages of his district.

He said the rain had caused heavy flooding in the area, killing 9 animals and destroying 13 houses and crops over hundreds of acres of land.

Nangrahar governor’s spokesman Ahmad Zia Abdulzai told Pajhwok that the Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS) and International Committee of the Red Cross (IRCC) had distributed aid to 20 families in both districts.  

Abdulzai said that every affected family was given 75kg of rice, 25kg of beans, 16kg of ghee, 5kg of sugar, 2kg of tea, kitchen supplies, blankets and tarpaulins on Friday and Saturday mornings.

Last year this month, heavy flooding affected more than 3000 families in Nangarhar.
