Illegal armed groups still operating in north: DIAG
"We have disarmed almost 180 armed groups and some 20 other are still present in the northern zone," the head of Disbandment of Illegal Armed Group (DIAG) said.
At a ceremony for the transfer of arms to DIAG, Gen. Abdul Manan told Pajhwok Afghan News the groups also connived with drug smugglers in the region.
"There are some areas in the north which were declared peaceful. But arms have once again found their way to those area," he said, adding 54 arms were handed over to DIAG by the Balkh police headquarters.
Deputy police chief, Maj. Gen. Abdur Rauf Taj, said they had seized the weapons, including Kalashnikovs, pistols and rockets, in a string of operations that also led to the arrest of 28 criminals.
Earlier in the year, the police had handed over 91 arms of different types to DIAG.
