13 militants killed in Wardak offensive: police
MAIDAN SHAHR (PAN): Police on Tuesday said that 13 Taliban insurgents have been killed during an overnight joint operation by Afghan and foreign troops in the Chak district of central Maidan Wardak province.
The operation was carried out in the Siyab Dara area late on Monday night, provincial police chief, Col. Abdul Qayum Baqizai, told Pajhwok Afghan News. The governor's spokesman, Shahidullah Shahid, also confirmed the police chief's claim, but he had no information about casualties.
Baqizai said the insurgents included two notorious rebel commanders, Maulvi Muhibullah and Ayubi and one militant from Waziristan area of Pakistan. The militants had a gathering in the area when they were attacked by the joint forces, the police chief said.
A local resident, who did not want to be named, confirmed four Taliban fighters had been killed in the offensive.
The Taliban on Saturday claimed to have shot down a US helicopter, killing 31 troops and seven Afghan Special Forces onboard.
