Senators seek more security around Parliament
The upper house had summoned Interior Minister Bismallah Mohammadi to answer questions from senators.
Chairman Fazl Hadi Muslimyar and some other members told Mohammadi that some guesthouses near the Parliament building were frequented by gunmen.
While expressing their concern over the situation, the lawmakers said they did not know who the gunmen were.
Muslimyar said the ministry should take precautionary measures to prevent possible rebel attack on the Parliament building.
"We cannot differentiate between enemies and friends. The situation needs immediate attention to deal with any untoward incident," the chairman said.
Mohammadi assured lawmakers that his ministry would intensify efforts at protecting the house from any possible threat. He directed the authorities concerned to take necessary steps in this connection.
Militants have carried out a number of deadly attacks in Kabul in the recent past. The attacks targeted the Inter-Continental Hotel, the Defence Ministry, some trader centres and the house of a presidential adviser, who was killed last month.
