21 dead in Waziristan drone attacks
The drone fired two missiles at a car and a compound, killing 21 people, including Haqqani Network commanders and some Arab, Uzbek, Afghan and Chechen fighters, a local security official said on condition of anonymity.
The incident took place at 2am in the Kharwanti village of Miranshah town, where the Haqqani Network used the compound as a militant training centre, said another local official, Ghulam Ali Dawar. However, he put the toll at16 dead and four wounded.
It was not clear whether the victims were civilians or militants, he said. Since the beginning of 2011, the CIA has carried out 40 drone attacks in Waziristan, killing dozens of militants and civilians. The strikes continue despite strong protests from the Pakistan government.
