Industrialists want 50pc of ACCI membership
Sherbaz Kaminzada, president of the Afghanistan Industrialists' Association, urged Parliament to approve a draft commerce and industry law, giving them 50 percent of ACCI membership.
Flanked by colleagues from different provinces, he told a news conference in Kabul the proposed law had been sent to the Wolesi Jirga, lower house. The measure would pass the house soon, he said.
National traders, who attach little value to local products, import low-quality merchandise, he complained, saying their apathy had almost led to the collapse of Afghan industrial units.
In order to promote local products, Kaminzada suggested, the government should enhance taxes on imports.
If their membership was not increased, the industrialists warned of walking out of ACCI and forming their own chamber. Support for local products spurred the economy and helped generate job opportunities, in addition to preventing capital flight.
