HERAT: At least six people were killed and as many others wounded during an exchange of fire between Taliban and the law-enforcement personnel in western Herat province, an official said on Saturday.
The overnight firefight happened in the Mehrabad village of Pashtun Zarghoon district, Col. Abdur Rauf Ahmadi, spokesman for the western police zone, told Pajhwok Afghan News. Police captured two fighters during the encounter.
He said four rebels were killed and five more injured. Also, two policemen were killed and a third wounded in the clash.
Meanwhile, police seized 50 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, four hand grenades and some weapons from a farmland in the 10th city district.
KABUL: As many as 18 Taliban militants have been killed, seven others injured and another 31 detained during security operations across the country over past 24 hours, the interior ministry said on Saturday.
In a press statement, the ministry said that the operations were conducted in central Kabul, eastern Nangarhar, southern Helmand, southeastern Paktika, southern Kandahar, southeastern Zabul, northern Baghlan, southeastern Paktia and western Farah provinces.
Weapons including 14 mines, two rocket launchers, five mortar shells, seven Kalashnikovs, six pistols, jerry cans full of explosives, five motorcycles and a vehicle belonging to insurgents were also sized by national forces during these operations, it said.
The ministry also said that three people attempting to travel foreign countries with fake passports were detained at the Kabul International Airport by police.
Another four people were detained on the charges of robberies on highways and at the Kalola Poshta square of Kabul, the statement said.

NANGARHAR: One person was killed and eight others were injured in an accident in the Khogyani district of eastern Nangarhar province late on Friday, a resident said.
The incident occurred after a car plunged into a ravine, Abdullah told Pajhwok Afghan News. Loshai villagers met the accident on their way from the district bazaar to the village after offering the Friday prayer.
But the provincial governor’s spokesman, Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, contradicted the casualty figure, saying two people, aged between 15 and17, were killed and six others wounded in the accident.
