New mining policy to be enforced in 2 weeks
At the end of a consultative meeting attended by officials concerned, Wahidullah Shahrani told a press conference in Kabul the policy would help resolve problems which occurred during extraction and development of mines.
He said the policy underlined healthcare, salary and other facilities for mine workers and collective problems residents could face as a result of extraction of mines.
Resettlement of families displaced by extraction is part of the policy, according to Shahrani, who hoped the guidelines would help overcome indiscipline that currently existed in the sector.
Shahrani said the policy would attract foreign investors and result in development of the sector. He did not explain why the ministry had no elaborate policy in the past.
When contacted, the ministry's spokesman, Jawad Omar, said former officials of the ministry should be asked the question.
