Militants attacked a joint patrol of Afghan and international forces in Chamtal at 9am, provincial police spokesman Sher Jan Durrani told Pajhwok Afghan News.

One insurgent was killed and several others were injured, with security forces still staying in the area, he said.

The ISAF press office in Mazar Sharif said one Swedish soldier was injured in the attack. He was evacuated to an ISAF hospital, where doctors said he was in stable condition.

Resident confirmed the clash and said they remained indoors. Jarkala villager Muhammad Usman said he heard fire around 8am. Later, helicopters also arrived, but they dropped no bombs, he added.

Talibaninfo-icon spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed three foreign soldiers were killed and a fourth injured in the incident.
