2 Haqqani militants killed, 7 held in Paktia
GARDEZ (PAN): Two Haqqani network members were killed and seven others arrested during an overnight offensive by Afghan and international troops in the Zurmat district of southeastern Paktia province, the western military alliance said on Sunday.
As a result of the operation, two militants associated with the Waziristan-based Haqqani group were killed and several others arrested, NATO said in a statement. Some arms and ammunition were also recovered.
The clash broke out after a group of insurgents attacked the troops who called for air support. The district chief, Gulab Shah, confirmed the operation in the Hasankhel village.
But Police chief Gen. Abdul Ghaffar Sapi contradicted the ISAF view that it was a combined operation. He said the offensive was conducted without any coordination with local authorities.
Last week, a NATO helicopter made a hard landing in the Hasankhel village. The Taliban claimed shooting down the copter.
