Check-posts being set up in Pech valley: Wahidi
ASADABAD (PAN): Four Afghan National Army (ANA) and police check-posts are being established on the highway in the Dara Pech area of Manogai district in eastern Kunar province, the governor said on Sunday.
In an interview with Pajhwok Afghan News, Fazlullah Wahidi said the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and ANA soldiers would start conducting joint patrols the valley in the near future.
American forces stationed in the area sometimes change their locations but they would continue to cooperate with Afghan police and army in time of need, he added.
The international troops maintain kept security in Manogai when ANA and police have to escort convoys of logistic supplies to the eastern city of Paron, the capital of Nuristan province, the governor explained.
Wahidi said foreign troops would support Afghan forces, but they would not be permanently stationed in their previous bases. Tribal elders and militants have assured the government ANA and police will not be attacked.
The presence of foreign soldiers is necessary to prevent attacks by foreign fighters, he said, calling Pech a strategic place. The valley has high mountains that provide safe havens to insurgents.
Wahidi said that security in the valley would be maintained in cooperation with tribal elders and the troops would also monitor the border with Nuristan.
