1,000 acres of land returned to govt
JALALABAD (PAN): Up to 1,000 acres of state-owned land was returned to the government in the Batikot district of eastern Nangarhar province, officials said on Monday.
Last week, Sai Pai, a sub-tribe of Shinwari, and Kuchis traded fire over control of the land in the Char Dehi desert. The gunbattle resulted in 16 casualties.
The land wrested back from encroachers as a result of an operation by Afghan National Army (ANA) on Monday morning, Batikot district chief Israrullah Qarizada told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The troops destroyed 200 houses, constructed illegally, with bulldozers and tractors, Qarizada said, adding the soldiers faced no resistance.
The land belongs to the Nangarhar Development Authority, said the head of the department, Engineer Hakim.
Powerful individuals grabbed 1,000 acres of state land over the past two decades in the province. Nearly 100 acres of government land in the district are still being controlled by encroachers.
