3 convicted of drug trafficking

KABULinfo-icon(PANinfo-icon): A primary court sentenced three individuals to 20 years in jail on charges of drug trafficking, the Criminal Justice Task Force (CJTF) announced on Tuesday.

The men were convicted at the end of an open trial on the basis of evidence. They had defence lawyers to plead their cases, a statement from the CJTF said.

The convicts from Helmand were detained with 1,400 kilograms of opium during a joint patrol by Afghan and International Security Assistance Force (ISAFinfo-icon) in the Registan desert of Garmser district.

Under the relevant law, a convict can move a court of appeal before approaching the Supreme Court against the verdict.

In the first quarter of the current solar yearinfo-icon (Mar 22-Jun 21, 2011), the primary court convicted 177 people on charges of drug trafficking. However, one accused was exonerated.
