1,000 kg of explosives, suicide vests seized
KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): Afghan intelligence agents seized 1,000 kilograms of explosives and 33 suicide vests in southern Kandahar province on Wednesday, an official said.
The explosives were recovered from a coach in the Shahr-i-Safa area between Kandahar and Zabul provinces, said the provincial intelligence chief, Brig. Gen. Mohammad Naeem Momin.
Addressing a news conference, the National Directorate of Security director said the explosives had been placed skillfully in bundles of second-hand clothes. Both the drivers, who wanted to deliver the explosives to terrorists in the two provinces, were arrested.
Shown to journalists, the detainees confessed to their crimes. The spy agency says the men are still being investigated.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Toryalai Weesa praised the intelligence personnel for thwarting possible terror plots in Kandahar and Zabul.
