HERAT CITY (PANinfo-icon): Two Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers were killed and eight others wounded when an explosives-rigged rickshaw was detonated in the 5th police district of western Herat City Saturday morning, an officials said.

The explosion struck an ANA vehicle at around 6:20am on a road that has been opened as an alternative route to the road lined with minarets, which has been closed to preserve the structures. The vehicle was carrying Zafar Military Corps’ personnel, Col. Najibullah Najibi, a spokesman for the Zafar Military Corps, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Two ANA soldiers were killed and eight others hurt in the blast, said Najibi, who added that three of the injured were discharged from the Herat Regional Hospital after receiving first aid while five others, whose injuries were critical, were still hospitalized there.

No civilians were hurt in the incident, he concluded.

The Talibaninfo-icon were behind the blast, claimed Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, who said 12 police, including some officers, were killed and 13 others wounded. The vehicle was also destroyed, Ahmadi concluded.

Usman, a local resident, said: “The explosion occurred near the curve of the alternative road of the minarets. When I got out of my house, I saw a bus and an ANA ranger vehicle, both of them damaged.”

There were puddles of blood on the scene and the victims had already been rushed to the hospital, he said, speculating that there were no civilian casualties as it was early morning and no civilians were passing the area.

The blast comes two days after 24 civilians, including womeninfo-icon and children, were killed and 11 others wounded after two vehicles struck roadside bombs.

Herat is one of seven areas where security responsibilities were handed over to Afghan security forces from international troops nearly a month ago.
