Relief distributed to flood victims

Relief distributed to flood victims

Aug 24, 2011 - 16:55

JALALABAD (PANinfo-icon): Dozens of flood-affected families received food and other relief items in the Nazyan district of eastern Nangarhar province on Wednesday, officials said.

Rural Rehabilitation and Development Director, Eng. Akmal Humayun Faqiri, told Pajhwok Afghan News they had identified 175 deserving families during a survey in Tarkhai, Zhai Sar, Robai, and Landai villages.

In addition to food items, kitchenware, water pots, blankets, and tarpaulins were distributed to the families, he said. Reconstructioninfo-icon projects would be launched in areas hit by the disaster, the director said.

The Nazyan district chief, Mohammad Essa, said more than 50 retaining walls and water channels had been destroyed by the flash floods triggered by heavy rains over the past one week.

He thanked the Rural Rehabilitation and Development Department for supplying the relief items to the affected families.

The relief goods were distributed a three-member delegation led by the district development council head.

Essa urged the government to urgently reconstruct floods-affected projects in his district.

“The problems of our people can’t be solved with a few jerry canes, tarpaulins and kitchen wares,” the district development council head, Abdul Qadir Tizab, said.

He asked the Rural Rehabilitation Department, the Afghan Red Crescent Societyinfo-icon and the Worldinfo-icon Food Programme to provide the affected families with sufficient assistance.
