4 police linked to civilian deaths detained
MAZAR-I-SHARIF (PAN): Four policemen were detained on charges of involvement in killing two civilians in northern Balkh province, an official said on Thursday.
The killings took place in Baba Yadgar area of Mazar-i-Sharif, where three policemen and one woman officer entered a house for a search on Wednesday, said the northern zone police spokesman.
Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai said police forced Abdul Samad, 21, and his sister Khalida, 18, to jump into a well. As a result, the two were killed, he added.
A woman from the victims' family said police forced Abdul Samad to jump into the well and bring out concealed alcoholic beverages. Khalida was also killed when she rushed to save his brother.
The woman showed media representatives the injuries she suffered at the hands of police.
Governor Atta Mohammad ordered the arrest of policemen following a complaint from the family.
Balkh police spokesman, Sher Jan Durrani, said the police searched the house legally. He had no information about the civilian killings.
