GARDEZ (PAN): Five abducted Pakistani citizens were killed by their captors in the Chamkani district of southeastern Paktia province, officials said on Thursday. The Parachinar residents were kidnapped a month ago.
The kidnappers had demanded seven million Pakistani rupees ($ 80,825) in ransom from victims' families, the Janikhel district chief, Sadaat Khan, told Pajhwok Afghan News. The five were killed on Wednesday after their families failed to pay the ransom.
Khan said the men's bodies were found dumped in a hilly area of the district. While travelling from Peshawar to Parachinar, they were kidnapped near Gardez, the capital of Paktia province.
The Parachinar residents wanted to avoid being caught in possible clashes between rival sectarian groups in Kurram and opted to travel through Afghanistan. Hundreds of peoples have been killed in the Shia-Sunni conflict.
Meanwhile, the governor house said arrangements were being made to transfer the dead bodies to their families. The Taliban denied their involvement in the kidnapping saga.
