Salang tunnel reconstruction in 2 weeks
Ahmad Shah Waheed, during a visit to the area, told Pajhwok Afghan News work on the Russian-built tunnel would be completed in two weeks.
A 3.8-kilometre stretch of the road has been paved, according to the minister, who said a power supply system and a ventilation machine had been installed in the tunnel. The heating system will be fixed in two weeks.
The tunnel repair project will account for $5 million (235,900,000 afs), provided by the United States Agency for International Development.
Gen. Rajab, the Salang maintenance department head, said he was satisfied with the rebuilding work. He, however, complained the ministry concerned did not bother about providing them with snow-clearing machines and repairing the road.
He said 18,000 vehicles passed through the tunnel daily, while the reconstructed part of the road was sufficient for 2,000 vehicles only.
Without giving a specific date, Waheed promised the ministry would embark on a second phase of repairing the highway in the near future.
