US supports IEC decision
HERAT CITY (PAN): The United States on Thursday supported the Independent Election Commission's decision to resolve the lingering dispute over results from last year's parliamentary poll.
On Sunday, the IEC disqualified nine sitting MPs in favour of as many candidates previously certified as having lost the 2010 parliamentary election.
The decision came after President Hamid Karzai authorised the commission to look into the appeal court's verdict and finalise the issue.
Without giving details, US Ambassador to Afghanistan Ryan C. Crocker backed the IEC decision. The UN Secretary General's special envoy for Afghanistan, Stefan de Mistura, and the European Union have also supported the move.
