41 freed from Nangarhar prison

Aug 27, 2011 - 16:51

JALALABAD (PANinfo-icon): Forty-one prisoners were released and jail terms of 120 others reduced in eastern Nangarhar province, officials said on Saturday.

The release and remissions are based on a presidential decree on the eve of Eidul Fitr and Afghanistaninfo-icon's 92nd Independence Day, which was marked on Aug. 19.

Among those freed 32 were males, six females and three juvenile criminals. They were asked not to commit crimes, Director of Appellate Court Abdul Qayum Waziri said.

Director of Prisons for Eastern Zone Col. Abdul Wali Hesarak said jail terms of 120 prisons had been reduced by up to five years.  The inmates had the opportunity to attend school and learn skills like carpentry, canning and sewing, Wali added.

Gul Bibi, 35, resident of Tagab district of Kapisa province, said she had eloped with her lover and was arrested later on. She had served three of her six-year term. She wanted to be reunited with her family.
