Twin explosions rock Kandahar City
KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): At least one person was killed and 20 others, including more than a dozen children, were injured in two consecutive car-bombings in southern Kandahar City on Saturday.
The first back blasts hit a joint base of Afghan and foreign troops in the cantonment area of the first police district in Kandahar City, the governor's spokesman, Zalmay Ayubi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He said the second blast happened metres from the scene of the first one. Pick-up vehicles were used for the suicide attacks, the spokesman added.
A doctor said two of the 20 wounded brought to the provincial civil hospital were in critical condition.
A tailor in the area said that windowpanes of houses in the vicinity, cars and shops were smashed as a result of the explosion. A helicopter of foreign troops took off after the incident, he added.
A local police official said on condition of anonymity three foreign troops were among the casualties.
As usual, the Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. Their spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi said their men -- Noorullah and Habibullah -- had carried out the attack that killed dozens of Afghan and international troops.
