KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): A suicide bomber detonated his explosives-laden car before reaching his target in the Deh Sabz district of Kabul, officials said on Sunday.

The incident occurred at around 5:45 am on the main road near Mohamdia town of the district, Hashmatullah Stanikzai, the 101st Asmai zone spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The suicide attacker was heading toward unknown location and detonated the explosives as he was being pursued by police, Stanikzai said, explaining that the bomber's nationality was not yet clear as his body had blown to pieces and only his hand remained intact.

However, the Interior Ministry said in a statement that the suicide attacker was moving toward Bagram and the explosives went off near Barik Ab town.

Eyewitnesses said the blast was very powerful and panicked the residents.

Zabiullah Mujahid, a Talibaninfo-icon spokesman, claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was carried out by fighter Amirullah on the Kabul-Bagram Highway.

He said that the attack targeted a convoy of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), killing 12 high-ranking CIA agents, including the head of the convoy.

Nearly 750 kilograms of explosives were used in the attack, which also destroyed two vehicles, Mujahid concluded.
