Mastermind of suicide blast that killed Kandahar police chief arrested
KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): The mastermind behind a suicide attack that killed police chief of southern Kandahar province, Khan Mohammad Mujahid, has been arrested, a senior intelligence official said on Tuesday.
On April 15, Mujahid was killed in an attack on his headquarters by a suicide bomber wearing a police uniform. He had survived at least three attacks on his life.
Besides the mastermind, another four suspects had also been arrested in connection with the attack, said Kandahar intelligence chief, Gen. Mohammad Naeem Momin.
He said the detainees were also involved in killings of government officials and tribal elders.
Momin identified the architect of the suicide attack as Atta Mohammad, a police officer, who served in police for eight years. One of the detainees had role in the 2008 Kandahar jail break that resulted in the release of hundreds of inmates, including militants.
Atta Mohammad told reporters that he helped the attacker by taking him inside the police headquarters in his police vehicle.
He said he had also taken some injured police officials to hospital after the attack and then he had left for his home in Maroof district. He said he was arrested by intelligence officials few days ago when he arrived in Kandahar city to withdraw his salary from bank.
