130 militants, drug smugglers killed in east since March 21: official
HERAT CITY (PAN): More than a hundred rebels and drug smugglers were killed and scores of others detained by police in a series of operations in western Afghanistan since the start of the current Afghan year, an official said on Tuesday.
About 130 armed militants and drug traffickers were killed and another 65 injured since March 21, said Col. Abdul Rouf Ahmadi, the spokesman for western police zone. The operations were conducted in Farah, Ghor, Badghis and Herat provinces, he said.
About 743 different kinds of weapons, more than five tonnes of explosives, ammunitions, 30 cars and motorcycles were also seized during the period, he said..
As many as 82 policemen were also killed and another 142 injured during the operations, the official said.
Ahmadi said poppies cultivated over nearly 1,398 acres of land were eradicated and 164 drug smugglers were detained with 624 kg of drugs and chemical materials used in processing the drugs over the past five months.
