2 civilians wounded in Herat-Islamqala Highway suicide attack
HERAT CITY (PAN): Two members of a family, including a girl and her brother, were injured in a premature suicide attack in western Herat province, officials said on Tuesday.
The suicide bomber detonated his explosives-laden Corolla car before reaching a convoy of foreign advisors on Herat-Islamqala Highway in the Shabsh area of the Kuhsan district at around 7:30am, Noor Ahmad, the district chief, said.
The two civilians, waiting for a car lift on the roadside, were wounded in the blast that caused no casualties to the foreign military advisors of the Islamqala Border Police Battalion.
The injured were taken to a health facility in Islamqala, he explained.
Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, a Taliban spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News that a Taliban fighter, named Khalil Ahmad, carried out the assault. He claimed a dozen of International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), soldiers were killed in the blast which also destroyed three of their tanks.
This is the first explosion on the Herat-Islamqala Highway, a relatively peaceful transit road connecting the province with Iran.
